European Food Sure Summit
I had the privilege of attending the 15th Food Sure Summit held in Madrid on June 16th and 17th, a premier event that brings together leading food industry professionals, researchers, and innovators to discuss advancements in food safety, quality, and technology. The summit served as a vital platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and showcasing forward-thinking solutions shaping the future of food manufacturing. I delivered a presentation on “Traceability through Digitalization”, highlighting how digital technologies can extend visibility and control across complex supply chains. My talk emphasised the role of digitalization in enabling end-to-end traceability—improving transparency, compliance, and consumer trust—by leveraging smart data integration and real-time insights from production to distribution.
Smart Business
Digitization is one of the tools for business management. Starting from the Stone Ages and the continuous improvement journey completed so far to the current situation, where we are talking about digitalisation, various management tools/concepts/approaches have been employed in the past and still are in use such as quality control, quality assurance, lean manufacturing, Six Sigma etc; it is evident use of single is not good enough to have Smart Business in place. For a sustainable business related to the manufacturing or service sector, all activities undertaken in the business processes must be smart. Digitalization is a single tool for business management, but alone is not enough. An integrated approach consisting of the various tools mentioned above could be a viable way to achieve maximum and lead to business to a SMART BUSINESS.Comments are requested.

I couldn't agree more that the role of a Technical leader in a F&B business is so much more complex than it was even 5 years ago...with the advancement of technology solutions to enhance critical controls through to the digitalisation of systems they are now required to work in an environment that is not just about setting the right procedures, but understanding how best to utilise and leverage these technologies to gain a deeper understanding of where to target improvements. In this environment it is imperative for them to have the right teams - both internal and external partners - to support critical thinking and maximise the value to safe food production.
"Agree with you — thank you for reinforcing this! You've made an important point about the role of internal and external teams. Technical leaders can’t deliver digital transformation in isolation; they need cross-functional support and trusted technology partners to truly drive improvement. The shift isn’t just technical — it’s cultural and strategic. Enabling critical thinking within the teams and fostering a mindset of continuous improvement is just as important as the systems themselves."
I totally agree Syed...a great reminder to industry that if there is one area of focus all businesses should be prioritising for digitalisation of food safety it is traceability.
Furthermore, this will be an imperative for many US as well as foreign companies producing foods on the Food Traceability List (FTL) for human consumption in the US by January 20th, 2026. If you want to know more about what you need to do to demonstrate compliance with the FDA's FSMA 204 check out: FSMA Final Rule on Requirements for Additional Traceability Records for Certain Foods | FDA
And whilst demonstrable compliance with this legislation is a lever for many businesses to employ digital tools, the improved tracking of product traceability is a critical element for the food sector in delivering our obligation to consumer protection around the world.
