IT and Traceability
In the food and beverage industry, establishing product traceability is a critical regulatory and business requirement. It allows companies to track ingredients and finished food products throughout the supply chain, which is essential for quickly and accurately withdrawing or recalling unsafe items when necessary. Additionally, traceability enables businesses to monitor and control their supply chains, reducing the risk of fraud and ensuring that their materials are ethically and sustainably sourced.
Traditionally, traceability relied on paper-based records and forms, which were time-consuming and susceptible to issues like lost documents and unauthorized corrections. However, advancements in information technology have significantly improved traceability protocols, allowing complete traceability exercises to be completed in minutes instead of hours. When a product needs to be recalled after leaving the manufacturing site, every minute is crucial. IT-based traceability plays a vital role in preventing unsafe products from reaching consumers.

I totally agree Syed...a great reminder to industry that if there is one area of focus all businesses should be prioritising for digitalisation of food safety it is traceability.
Furthermore, this will be an imperative for many US as well as foreign companies producing foods on the Food Traceability List (FTL) for human consumption in the US by January 20th, 2026. If you want to know more about what you need to do to demonstrate compliance with the FDA's FSMA 204 check out: FSMA Final Rule on Requirements for Additional Traceability Records for Certain Foods | FDA
And whilst demonstrable compliance with this legislation is a lever for many businesses to employ digital tools, the improved tracking of product traceability is a critical element for the food sector in delivering our obligation to consumer protection around the world.
