FDA's Deputy Commissioner for Human Foods resigns
Jim Jones, the Deputy Commissioner for Human Foods at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), resigned last week over high number of layoffs from new Trump administration.
In Mr. Jones' resignation letter, he cited the "indiscriminate" firing of 89 employees with “highly technical expertise in nutrition, infant formula [and] food safety response” within the human foods program. Jones stated it would be "fruitless for him to continue" in light of Trump's "disdain" for people capable of progressing the government's agenda to reduce health risks arising from chemicals in food for the American people.
Mr. Jones also shared his disapproval of the new secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr's, comments about the FDA. In his resignation letter, he wrote:
"The secretary’s comments impugning the integrity of the food staff, asserting they are corrupt based on falsities, is a disservice to everyone."
Mr. Jones' tenure at the FDA included him overseeing the recent landmark ban on Red Dye No.3.
