Coca-Cola has had to recall its drinks across several countries in Europe, due to 'higher levels' of the chemical chlorate which can cause health issues. The drinks were distributed at the end of 2024 to Belgium, Britain, France, Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.

Five product lines have been affected by the chemical - Sprite, Fanta, Coke, Minute Maid and Tropico, according to the Belgium branch of Coca-Cola's international bottling and distribution operation.

Chlorine disinfectants widely used in water treatment and food processing can lead to the presence of chlorate in foods. High levels of chlorate exposure can cause thyroid-related health issues, in particular for those with pre-existing thyroid conditions, young children and babies.

A Coca-Cola spokesperson told the BBC: “Independent expert analysis concludes that any associated risk for consumers is very low.”

The affected drinks have production codes ranging from 328 GE to 338 GE, which can be found on the bottom of cans or on the neck of bottles.
